A photographic exhibition on Royalty, Traditions and ‘Thoranas’

The most significant royal visit to Sri Lanka took place in April 1954 when Queen Elizabeth II visited, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. A crowd of fifty thousand people gathered to sing 'Happy Birthday' on her twenty-eighth birthday.

For the royal visit in 2024, a panel exhibition titled 'Arches of Awe' is being displayed in remembrance of the 1954 royal visit. This exhibition features photographs depicting the 21 arches erected across Colombo to welcome Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to Sri Lanka in 1954. The exhibition has been curated by George Cooke who is a Diplomatic Historian.
