Ceylon Literary & Arts Festival 2025

The British Council will support two UK authors, Sophie Mackintosh and Suli Breaks at the Ceylon Literature & Arts Festival 2025. This collaboration showcases the excellence of contemporary UK literature, fostering international connections and cultural exchange.

Festival Sessions:

17 January: 5:10 pm - 5:40 pm – Louder Than Silence | Suli Breaks at the Main Hall, Public Library Colombo.

18 January: 10:30 am - 11:10 am – Of Control and Obsession | Sophie Mackintosh in conversation with Sukanya Wignaraja at the Main Hall, Public Library Colombo.

18 January: 2:05 pm - 2:35 pm – Hakuna Matata Pays the Electricity Bill | Suli Breaks in conversation with Dinara Punchihewa at the Main Hall, Public Library Colombo.

Podcasts 

The British Council supports UK literature by connecting authors, publishers, and literary professionals with international audiences and new markets.

We are also collaborating with The Gratiaen Trust to have Sophie Mackintosh and Suli Breaks on the Gratiaen Pods Series thereby bringing UK literature to a wider international audience to experience. 

The podcasts recorded at the British Council Colombo Library will be available to listen shortly on Gratiaen Trust and our socials.  

Cinema screenings 

The British Council will extend our complimentary cinema tickets offer, run in partnership with Scope Cinemas and Ceylon Theatres, to festival goers this weekend where they can watch Royal Ballet and Opera House in Cinema’s Cinderella and National Theatre Live’s Life of Pi at evening screenings from 17 to 19 January at Scope cinema CCC and Majestic cinema – Majestic City.   Festival goers will have the chance to enjoy special screenings of RBO Cinderella and NTL Life of Pi, two outstanding productions that bring the magic of theatre to the big screen. This initiative underscores our commitment to enriching the cultural experience of the festival, offering a unique blend of live theatre and cinema for audiences to enjoy—a rare opportunity to witness these extraordinary performances from the comfort of a cinema seat!

UK author Sophie Mackintosh

Novelist

A celebrated novelist and poet, is known for her unique fiction and essays published in top outlets such as Granta, The White Review, and The New York Times. Her debut novel, The Water Cure, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and her second novel, Blue Ticket, followed in 2020. Her most recent work, Cursed Bread, was longlisted for the Women’s Prize in 2023. Sophie was also named to the 2023 Granta Best of Young British Novelists list.

UK author Suli Breaks

Spoken-word Poet

Suli Breaks is a spoken word poet and writer whose work focuses on education, politics, and personal introspection. Gaining widespread recognition for his viral video "Why I Hate School but Love Education," Suli has been celebrated by major platforms like the BBC and The Guardian. His thought-provoking performances include TEDGlobal and Commonwealth Day 2020.
