A statement of purpose document plays an integral role in the application process of a study abroad program as it provides the admission board with the key information about the candidate and why they want to study a particular course at their institution. British Council is conducting a unique session for aspiring students, professionals, educators and other interested participants on writing an impactful Statement of Purpose (SOP) for university applications. Delivered by experts in the field, this online interactive session, will show students what should be included in a statement of purpose and what universities are looking for when they read the applications. 

What to expect? 

Overview of the purpose and importance of an SOP: explanation on why this is considered one of the most documents of a university application. 

Understanding the structure and key components: Students will learn the general structure of an SOP

Tips on tone and style: how to achieve clarity, conciseness and a personal but formal tone. 

Do’s and Don’ts: common pitfalls and what to avoid.

Q & A: a chance for students to clear doubts and ask questions that may not have been covered.

Eligibility: This session is for participants who are 16 years and above. Ideal for students applying for higher education, career changers or professionals seeking advanced programmes, guidance counsellors and educators.  

Delivery platform: This session will be delivered online via Zoom. The link to the session will be sent to registered participants 24 hours before the session. 

Meet the expert - Aakriti Jhunjhunwala 

Aakriti is the Senior Recruitment Manager (India region) for the University of St Andrews, Scotland. She is involved with the recruitment strategies for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs at St Andrews. Aakriti completed her MBA with Distinction from Imperial College London in 2023. She received the prestigious Imperial Dean's Community Award for her significant contributions beyond academics as well as the Imperial Dean's Scholarship for Academic Excellence.

Currently based in Kolkata, Aakriti is an active member of the Indo British Scholars Association (IBSA), where she helps promote Indo-British education and ties.
