The 'Women of the World festival' is an initiative to celebrate women and girls' achievements and create a safe space for discussing challenges faced by them. The festival was founded by Jude Kelly of the WOW Foundation, UK. The British Council facilitated the first WOW festival in Colombo in December 2017.

Following the success of this, we initiated the Voices and Choices grant scheme to provide a platform for women who were inspired and wanted to implement their own initiative to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In March this year, we sent a Sri Lankan delegate, Kinita Shenoy, a curator of the WOW Colombo festival to the 10th year anniversary of the WOW London festival. Read her blog to find out the amazing experience she had.

In June Sri Lankan artist, Irushi Tennekoon’s Animate Her project videos of inspiring Sri Lankan women were showcased at the WOW Global 24hr digital festival as part of the British Council South Asia WOW programme.
