The Workshop Players, one of Sri Lanka’s foremost English theatre groups, is famed for bringing some of the best of Broadway musicals such as ‘Cats’, ‘Lion King’, ‘Oliver!’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Evita’, 'The Phantom of the Opera' and most recently the highly acclaimed ‘Les Miserables’ to the local stage.
In partnership with British Council Sri Lanka, the Workshop Players present Colombo’s first ‘Shakespeare In the Park’ festival, consisting of three of Shakespeare’s plays currently being studied as texts by local O/L, A/L and University students.
The festival will be held at the Viharamahadevi open air theatre during April and May 2016 from 07.00pm onwards.
The order of the 03 plays will be as follows;
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (28 - 29 APRIL)
Directed by Amayaa Wijesinghe, Lehan Thomas, Leyanvi Mirando, and Tanika Fernando
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (07 - 08 MAY)
Directed by Javin Thomas
OTHELLO (14 - 15 MAY)
Directed by Jerome de Silva and Nadishka Aloysius
The plays will be presented consecutively for a running period of two days each, allowing for maximum patronage from interested students, theatre goers, and the general public across the Island, totalling to a 6-day run for the whole festival.
Food and drink stalls along with texts, scripts, and educational items would be available throughout the festival.
